Activity Documentation: Random Act of Kindness

We had decided to go to Target for our normal outing. I thought we'd pick up trash around the area, but instead, we decided to collect all of the "runaway" carts in the parking lot/side walk/grassy areas. Hallen LOVED doing this. She always wants to push the cart all by herself (I know everyone with a toddler knows the independence struggle), so I gave her the independence and told her she was being kind by helping the employees out and everyone driving so a cart wouldn't hit their car. She felt so big! I let her round all the carts up, and push them in the little cart stalls in the parking lot.

She took this cart from a little grassy bank, and was so excited to get it perfectly situated into the stall!

She had to make sure it was pushed all the way back.

We found a few more runaway carts around the parking lot.

She felt such an independence not having my hand on the cart with hers, helping her steer.

Big girl status! Loved helping others and spreading some kindness. She wanted to keep going!

Directions / What we did
We had decided to go to Target for our normal outing.

►   Possible ways to expand on the activity
To expand, you could do this at each store in the same shopping area. If you have an older child, you could also push a few of them back inside to help the employees!

►   What would you do differently next time?
I would have gone to one more shop since there are a few right beside each other. Hallen loves organizing and "doing grown up things" like that, so I think she would have liked to keep going.

What my child was able to do by themselves
Push the cart. I'm not sure if she knew it was being kind to others or if she thought it was just fun!

►   What my child needed help with
Nothing. We went at a time with not too much traffic, so there weren't many cars driving or ones that she would run into.

►   My child's thoughts about the activity
She loved it. She felt so big and excited that she was finally pushing the carts without my help.

►   Any other thoughts or info about the activity?
I thought this was a very good toddler activity. It was easy, can be done anywhere without much thought or effort. Just explain that they're doing something really great for others.
